Free Tax Filing — Which Service?
Tell us a tiny bit about your situation. We'll point you at a free filing option — almost everyone earning under $100K can file for $0 if they pick the right tool.
What it really means to file for free
FREE = $0 to the federal government AND $0 for the state return. Many tax services advertise "free" but charge $30-60 to file state. The options below cover both. Also: file electronically with direct deposit and you get your refund in 7-21 days, not 6+ weeks.
Trap: TurboTax / H&R Block "Free Edition"
They aggressively upsell during filing — "you have a deduction, upgrade for $89!" — and don't include state. By the time you finish, "free" cost $130. If you go that route, walk away the moment they try to charge anything. The options above are actually free, full stop.
You can claim missed credits up to 3 years back
If you didn't file last year (or the year before, or even three years ago) and you would have qualified for EITC or Saver's Credit — you can still get that money. File an amended return (Form 1040-X) using any of the free services. Real money waiting.
